Welcome to Upgrade your Mac dot co dot uk! My new web site devoted to taking computers apart and putting them back together so that they still work and hopefully better than they did when you started!
At the moment I am simply putting together the layout of the site with information about the computers that I will be taking apart. I have a number of planned upgrade demonstrations in the pipeline and a number that I have already done but will undo in order to photograph.
I will be adding numerous extras to the Mac OS X section as and when the ideas come up and for those interested hardware there are a number of planned additions in the projects section, mainly for Apple products:

Select the process that you wish to complete from the tabs below:
- Change your computer's name.
- Change your computer's workgroup.

Change your computer's name.

| Windows XP | Go to Control Panel>System Click on the TAB "Computer Name" and enter the name in "Computer Description". Click [OK] and restart your computer |
| Windows Vista | Go to Control Panel>System under "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings" click [change settings] then click [continue]. You will now see a "System Properties" window. Click Change and you will see another window with "Computer Name" near the top, change this and click [OK]. You will now need to restart. |

Change your computer's workgroup.

| MacOS X Leopard | Go to preferences>network you may be able to jump past this next paragraph but I have found that in a lot of cases you will need this too. At the top of the window is a box labelled "Location" and at the end of this box are two arrows going up and down. Click on these arrows and then click on "edit locations". Now a new window appears. Click on the "+" button and the word "untitled" appears which is highlighted, type in the name of your workgroup. Click on "Done". Click on "Apply". Click on the network adapter that you will be using to connect to the network from the left hand pane. Now type in the IP address of your router in the box labelled "DNS Server" on the right hand pane plus the name of your workgroup in the box below. Now click on "Advanced". Click on "DNS" and include the details of your router. Click on "WINS" and in the workgroup box type the name of your workgroup. Click "OK". Click "Apply". |

Share your printer.

Share a folder on your local network.

| MacOS X Leopard | Go to preferences>Sharing Click on "file sharing" in the left hand pane and make sure it is ticked. In the right hand pane you will now see "File Sharing: On" and below this a number of shared folders. Click on the "+" (under Shares Folders) and after a short pause you will see Leopards folder selector appear, click on the folder you wish to add and click the [Add] button in the bottom right. Once added you can adjust the users access privileges to the right of the shared folders box. |

| Windows XP | Locate the folder on your hard drive. Right click on the folder and select "sharing....". A window will appear, click on the option that you understand the consequences of sharing. Click to share this directory and then you can enter the name of the share and click on whether this will be read only or read/write. |

Attach to a shared folder. (on a windows computer)

| MacOS X Leopard | In finder look to the left hand side of the window where you will find "Shared" and under this will be a list on computers available on the network, click on the computer holding the folder you wish to connect to then in the top of the right hand window you will see "Connect as", click on this. If the computer you are attaching to has sharing enabled then after a few moments delay you will then see a new window. The new window states "Enter your user name and password to access the file server XXXX" then below this it says "connect as:" with the two options of [guest] and [registered user]. Select [registered user] and enter the name and password OF A REGISTERED USER ON THE WINDOWS COMPUTER! Once you have done this you will now be show the list of shares on that computer that the registered user you typed in above has access to. |
